The focus of a lot of business activities around the world at the moment is on how to cut costs and save money wherever possible so as to invest in the aspects of a business that provide the greatest return.

But many businesses often forget that in order for an activity to be efficient and profitable they need a high performing, positive team which has to be, particularly in the case of fleets, safe as well. So, how do you act positively to kick-off a safe driving culture while also saving money—in other words, how do you have your cake and eat it?

With this blog post we try to give you some tips on how to keep your team positive, proactive and, of course, safe.

#1 - Encourage dialogue, mutual collaboration and cooperation

Cooperation is a very important ingredient and something that most fleet management systems promote by encouraging good relations among teams of the same company: it is the dialogue between departments and the active sharing of information by everyone. Sometimes we can solve a problem simply by involving other team members who are able to provide a different view.

#2 - Support research and innovation

Innovation should never be feared as this is the method by which your company and team is able to evolve. Changing processes or experimenting with new technologies could potentially help to drive the business forward, so never miss the opportunity to try something new and never fear to think outside the box.

#3 - Reward and appreciate correct driver and staff behaviour

If you have been able to keep track of driver behaviour, have put your drivers through further training and have seen a noticeable improvement, then show some appreciation of the progress they have made by rewarding the right behaviour. Make sure you try to promote healthy competition within your team and you will quickly see the results—it should help to build team spirit and trust.

At the end of the day it isn't rocket science: keep morale up with an injection of positivity and you can reasonably expect a high performance team!
