How can GPS technology even be used as an “art form?”

18 March 2016 09:00:00 GMT | GPS & Tracking How can GPS technology even be used as an “art form?”

We know the full potential of GPS, but what we probably weren’t aware of was how GPS technology has opened the way to the creation of new forms of artwork!

SynX, our fleet management solution, can offer a great deal of useful insights for companies willing to organise their work, cut on costs and be compliant and responsible. Our solution exploits the power of GPS technology and vehicle tracking, which not only provides vehicle locations but also useful data to be cross-checked with other information.

We can definitely state with absolute confidence that we know the full potential of GPS, how so much is possible with the tools available and how they make fleet managers’ lives so much easier… but what we probably weren’t aware of was how GPS technology has opened the way to the creation of new forms of artwork!

Stephen Lund, a Canadian cyclist, does incredible drawings with the GPS routes he cycles by means of a tracker and an application registering his movements on the map and converting lines, in a novel but incredible form of art.

Stephen cycles for around 70 km every day and considers this a creative way of spending his free time. He has documented the necessary process for creating his “GPS doodles” (what he calls his creations in his blog and website, http://gpsdoodles.com).

His most complicated drawing is a mermaid, which is 200 km of cycling in total; he has even created a “less complicated” version which is only about 90 km long!

Check out his gallery (even Star Wars is included!). Stephen explains the whole concept in a TED talk he was involved with in 2015, an indicator of how famous he has become with his incredible idea.

The concept itself is quite inspirational—although recreating similar drawings with a motor vehicle would hardly qualify as fuel friendly—and can definitely make you appreciate just how much potential there is in the tools we have at our disposal, and how we can, with the aid of technology, discover new and powerful ways to do things.
