Everybody postpones issues for a variety of reasons, as we have already explained in a former blogpost, and fleet managers are no exception. But how do we fight this tendency too put things off? What strategies can fleet managers adopt to ward off the curse of procrastination?
#1 – Identify the consequences of “not doing that”
What, for a fleet manager, are the consequences of delaying a talk with a driver about certain issues that need discussing; or not checking the maintenance bills; or persistently using the same type of vehicle, despite the costs being higher than expected; or even… putting off the implementation of fleet management software?
Issues will always arise and don’t just disappear with the wave of a magic wand… and they often translate to higher costs, penalty points, fines, and those dreaded inspections that detect non-compliance…. Once you identify the consequences, you are far more motivated to set up an action plan, so… why not get started?
#2 – Be positive and proactive
If you are always saying “no”, you have “no” time, “no” resources, then “no” system will ever actually help you find the solutions you need for your fleet; you will start acting and thinking as if these negative statements were completely true! But is it so terrible to think outside the box for a moment? Get out of your comfort zone and start exploring alternative solutions; sticking with the same old negative attitude is not the way forward. Try not to always be so cynical and explore some possibilities you had not previously considered—you might be pleasantly surprised...
#3 – Visualize the efficiency you want for your fleet and get the tools to make it happen
