Scandinavian Driving style: Driving in Sweden

Sweden drivers are generally known to be punctual, law abiding and respectful of rules and regulations. However, according to some testimonials from foreigners driving in Sweden, it would seem that these attributes are not reflected on the roads.

Here we will share some comments from drivers visiting Sweden about the Swedes driving style. If you have also been a tourist driving in Sweden, don’t hesitate to share your observations too in the comment section. Whether you agree or disagree it would be good to get more feedback on the matter!

Swedes are really punctual, they can’t miss a meeting or it will begin whether they’re there or not, as a result they tend to hurry on the road. This in turn, means that speed limits aren’t always adhered to.

On highways and freeways there is always a warning about 100m in advance of any speed camera. This means that driving before the sign, they are speeding, however, they quickly slam on the breaks as soon as they see the warning sign. All before returning to their higher speed once the threat of the camera is behind them.

However, they do have to be careful as if you do get caught speeding, the fines are very high; from 160€ when you’re 10km/h too fast, to 430€ if you’re 36km/h too fast.

Due to the country’s infrastructure, it is quite easy to continue to drive fast as most of the roads are quite straight and any curves are very gradual. This is a heavy contributing factor in why Sweden has so many high-speed drivers.

It’s not always the drivers you need to worry about on the Swedish roads; wild animals such as deer and Pigs typically roam close to the roads. Some will have protective fencing, but that’s not always the case. It isn’t an offense to hit a wild animal, however you must report such incidents to the authorities immediately so that they can track down the wounded animal.

Unlike some other European drivers, the Swedish are actually quite friendly drivers. If you every find yourself stuck in the snow, someone is likely to stop and help you, or even offer you food and blankets!

Overall, the Swedes may be fast drivers, but they’re not thoughtless or reckless and are always willing to help out others who may run into trouble.

One thing to remember is always keep a shovel in your boot in case you need to dig yourself out of the snow as it can suddenly fall down quick!

Remember, if you think any of these testimonials sound familiar, feel free to share your thoughts on Swedish driving!
