This year will see the introduction of a new tyre labelling system in the EU. The regulation requires that tyres for private cars and light commercial vehicles, manufactured after 1st July 2012 and marketed in the EU from November 2012 onwards carry a sticker or be accompanied by a leaflet on show at the point of sale.

Tyres are a crucial element of your vehicles and inextricably linked to performance; they provide fleet managers, or anyone responsible for fleets, with immediate notice of any potential issue. The tyre labelling scheme is similar to that already familiar to consumers for household appliances.

Like the European energy label, the tyre label will use classes ranging from best-performance (green “A” class) to worst (red “G” class). Besides indicating how much the tyre affects the car’s fuel efficiency, there will be information about the tyre’s performance in wet conditions and its external rolling noise in decibels.

Tyre energy efficiency (fuel consumption and CO2 emissions) is related to its rolling resistance. Low rolling resistance plays a crucial part in how much a tyre contributes to fuel savings in the transport sector. Between two ratings, "A" and "B" for example, the difference in fuel consumption on a fully-equipped vehicle can be as much as 3 litres/100 km.

Having properly managed tyres as part of an efficient tyres maintenance system can only benefit fleets as well as optimise safety. In other words, tyres play a critical role. But what you might not be aware of, is that the amount you spend on fuel could also depend on your tyresThere are also other great tips to consider that you might find very effective for improving your fuel economy (and drivers’ safety, efficiency and overall fleet costs).
